"Breakfast participation has increased from 11% - 21% and lunch has gone up from 66% - 70%."
- Sally Nicholson, Director of Student Nutrition Services at Getty's Middle School
Students at Getty’s Middle School in Easley, South Carolina received a fresh start when they were relocated to the district’s old High School. In an effort to help make the space feel like their own Sally Nicholson, Director of Student Nutrition Services, was granted the approval to renovate the existing cafeteria. With the Boards confidence and full autonomy given to Sally, she made the right decision and contacted Interior Systems.
The school wanted a solution that would be budget friendly and completely turn-key. The previous color scheme included very dark walls and the seating arrangement consisted of multiple folding tables. Added to the mix were large pillars stacked throughout the middle of the entire space. Because of this, the space also lacked order when it came to serving students at meal time.
Interior System's designers were given full creative freedom and wanted to transform the cafeteria into a bright, inspirational space. We intended to maximize the space for its full potential and create a sense of order for the students at the serving lines.
We traded in the dark blue for a fresh coat of white paint and immediately elevated the mood with light green accents. The pillars were repurposed to showcase bold, character words. Careful seating selections and space planning allowed for more room between the tables. Special queue lines were installed to offer a more intuitive flow to the cafeteria lines.
The students and staff were blown away by the results and Sally couldn’t be happier about all the positive responses. They noticed a change in the entire behavior and attitude of the students has been amazing. Sally reports, “Students no longer have food fights and the yelling has decreased. They behave like young adults and it’s been wonderful.”
Interior Systems stayed right on budget. “Everything was on schedule, some things were even completed ahead of time and when the team came in to set up everything - it was like clockwork.” With the new layout, lunch times run much smoother. Breakfast participation has increased from 11%- 21% and lunch has gone up from 66% to 70%.
