DR. JULIET V. GARCIA MIDDLE SCHOOL
Atmospheres That Inspire and Invite

DESIGN INTENT
To create an environment that gives the feel of an upscale coffee shop, but that is whimsical enough to appeal to younger children.

ISI SOLUTIONS
A soothing, "coffee house" feel was created through the use of faux finish techniques and fiberglass panes.

Inspirational phrases were placed in key areas and colorful paintings of children were integrated to provide a "child-like" feel.

Uniquely designed railings featured curved frames to complement the curved walls in the space.

Folding tables and stackable chairs were included in the package to accommodate multi-purpose usage of after-school functions.

NEEDS

As population growth increases crowding in our public schools, and modern technology makes aging educational facilities seem obsolete, many school districts are struggling for solutions. Brownsville Independent School District decided they needed a new Middle School to house 6-8 graders in the area. The school -- Dr. Juliet V. Garcia Middle School -- not only provided added room in the district, but also an opportunity to re-image the District in itself.

CHALLENGES

Garcia Middle School was designed with a stylish, modern feel; ISI was challenged to create a space that complements the architectural design and provided a flexible floor plan.

Some specific goals included: implementing a safe, smooth traffic flow to lunch lines, creating a cafeteria that would not only appeal to students and staff alike, but that would also compete with local restaurants and eateries, designing a multi-purpose environment that would allow the space to be used for a variety of after-school activities.
