WESLACO HIGH SCHOOL
Creating Two Special Places To Increase Participation

DESIGN INTENT
Develop two unique, comfortable atmospheres that bring the spaces to life – one more soothing area for students to eat and chat, and one more energetic, playful area for students to gather and share. Through each unique environment, create a space that encourages students loyalty and commitment to school pride.

ISI SOLUTIONS
ISI, Weslaco High School, and the Weslaco students worked to design and implement a dramatic makeover – creating the well-received Weslaco Café and a Weslaco Sports Grill.

ISI illustrators added to the Grill environment by developing custom art to portray Hispanic students participating in sports activities that are particularly important to Weslaco High School.

The positive impact of the Café and Grill on student morale was felt throughout the school.

ISI was able to design a floor plan that would allow for comfortable student conversation niches and maximum seating. Weslaco was thrilled to be able to seat more students per session at that same time having a comfortable space in which students want to be.

By creating new layouts and new unique environments, ISI was ultimately able to help Weslaco meet their goal – bringing students back to the Weslaco cafeteria again and again…

And every school knows that increased participation means increased revenue.

NEEDS

The average food service program struggles with lack of participation, loss of revenue and a poor traffic flow, discipline problems, and an institutional feel that all involved would like to see changed.

CHALLENGES

Weslaco High School came to ISI with two cafeterias, one that would be brand new and one that would need to be remodeled. The food service director challenged ISI to create distinctly different atmospheres in the two cafeterias. We were also challenged to increase seating capacity to handle 707 students per lunch period, for a total of 1414 students per day. Additionally, Weslaco wanted one of the areas to promote school pride through sports, while reflecting the ethnic make-up of the school.
